Cubs ship Barrett to Padres

CHICAGO, June 20 (UPI) -- The Chicago Cubs Wednesday sent catcher Michael Barrett and cash considerations to San Diego for catcher Rob Bowen and minor league outfielder Kyler Burke.

The trade ended a tumultuous three-year period with the Cubs for the volatile Barrett.

He had dugout confrontations with pitchers Carlos Zambrano and Rich Hill earlier this month, and a fight with former Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski last season.

Barrett, 30, was expendable because of questionable defense this season.

He is a .267 career hitter, and is batting .256 with nine doubles, nine home runs and 29 RBI in 211 at-bats this season.

"It was time to shuffle the deck and improve the club defensively," Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry told The Chicago Tribune.

Bowen is batting .268 with two home runs and 11 RBI in 82 at-bats. Burke, a 35th-round draft pick by the Padres last year, was batting .211 with one home run in 213 at-bats with Single-A Fort Wayne.
