NHL: Ottawa 5, New Jersey 4

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., April 26 (UPI) -- Dany Heatley had a goal and two assists Thursday to lead the Ottawa Senators past New Jersey, 5-4, in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Ottawa scored four times in the first period, and spent the rest of the contest tying to hold New Jersey at bay.

The score was 4-1 after the first period on goals by Jason Spezza, Joe Corvo (power play, unassisted), Dean McAmmond (shorthanded, unassisted) and Heatley -- after New Jersey got its goal from Travis Zajac.

New Jersey came within 4-3 on second-period goals by Brian Gionta and Andy Greene.

The teams traded goals in the final period.

Spezza had one assist and Ray Emery made 26 saves on 30 shots for the Flames, who advanced to the semis after beating Pittsburgh in five games.

Zach Parise had a goal and two assists, and Martin Brodeur gave up five goals on 26 shots for the Devils, who played without Patrik Elias (cold).
