Baghdatis leads Open 13 winners

MARSEILLES, France, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Richard Gasquet and Marcos Baghdatis were among Thursday's winners at the Open 13 Tennis Tournament at Marseilles, France.

In a second-round match, Gasquet, the sixth seed in the tournament, beat fellow Frenchman Marc Gicquel, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. Baghdatis, the seventh seed and a native of Cyprus, topped qualifier Cyril Saulnier of France, 6-4, 6-3.

Frenchman Gilles Simon was leading, 6-1, 3-2, when former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt of Australia retired with a hamstring injury.

Robin Soderling of Sweden beat countryman Thomas Johansson, 6-4, 7-5; Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman trounced Italian Andreas Seppi, 6-1, 6-0; Russian Mikhail Youzhny overcame Frenchman Fabrice Santoro, the 1999 champion, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-3; and Finland's Jarkko Nieminen downed qualifier Nicolas Mahut of France, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Friday's quarters will pit Gasquet against Soderling and Baghdatis against Youzhny. Bjorkman faces Simon and Benneteau plays Nieminen.
