NHL: Vancouver 2, Ottawa 1

OTTAWA, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Roberto Luongo was solid in goal and Vancouver was lucky on offense Thursday night in a 2-1 Canucks' victory over the Ottawa Senators.

Luongo made 34 saves, allowing only a Daniel Alfredsson goal at 11:47 of the third period, and Vancouver notched its 10th win in 11 games.

Ottawa lost for the first time in six games but it took some fortunate Canucks' bounces to end the Senators' winning streak.

Game officials ruled that a slap shot that went off the skate of Taylor Pyatt -- who was in a crowd of players in front of the Ottawa net -- deflected on an unintentional play, giving Vancouver the 1-0 lead 5 1/2 minutes into the game.

Rory Fitzpatrick was credited with his first goal of the season seven minutes into the second period when his shot bounced off a Senators defenseman and into the goal. It was one of just 14 shots the Canucks managed in the contest.

Alfredsson made the score 2-1 when he redirected a pass from Dany Heatley past Luongo.
