Arizona's Webb wins NL Cy Young award

NEW YORK, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb, who tied for the National League lead in victories and shutouts, has been voted the league's Cy Young Award winner.

Webb was 16-8 with a 3.10 earned run average, three shutouts and 178 strikeouts for Arizona in 2006. He was listed first on 15 of the 32 Cy Young Award ballots, second on seven others and third on seven more.

His 103 total points left San Diego reliever Trevor Hoffman second in Cy Young voting with 77 points, including 12 first-place votes. Hoffman led the league with 46 saves and became the major league's all-time saves leader this season. Hoffman was 0-2 with a 2.14 ERA in 2006

St. Louis starter Chris Carpenter, last year's Cy Young Award winner, was third and Houston's Roy Oswalt fourth. Carpenter compiled a 15-8 record and 3.09 ERA while Oswalt was also 15-8 and led the league with a 2.98 ERA.

The award is decided on a vote of members of the Baseball Writers Association of America who cover National League teams.
