Safin wins his opener at Metz

METZ, France, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Former world No. 1 Marat Safin of Russia was among Wednesday's winners at the Open de Moselle tennis tournament in Metz, France.

Safin, who is not a seed in this event, won his first round match against fellow Russian and No. 4 seed Mikhail Youzhny, 6-1, 6-4.

Youzhny were members of Russia's Davis Cup team that beat the United States in a semifinal showdown in Moscow in September.

Also in the first round, Arnaud Clement of France beat Xavier Malisse of Belgium, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2; and Sebastien Grosjean of France beat Florian Mayer of Germany, 6-3, 6-4.

In second-round matches, Florent Serra of France topped Paul-Henri Mathieu, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), and wild card Marc Gicquel of France beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain, 6-2, 6-3.

In another first rounder, Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo beat fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, the seventh seed, 6-3, 6-3.
