MLB: Boston 2, L.A. Angels 1

ANAHEIM, Calif., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Josh Beckett scattered a run and four hits over six innings Thursday night as Boston edged the Los Angeles Angels, 2-1.

David Ortiz hit a solo home run; Doug Mirabelli hit an RBI ground-out; and Mike Lowell had a run and two hits for the Red Sox (71-56), who have won two of their last three games.

Beckett (14-8) had two walks and three strikeouts.

Jonathan Paplebon earned his 34th save.

The RBI gave Ortiz 120 for the season.

Howie Kendrick hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning; and Orlando Cabrera had two hits for the Angels (67-61), who have dropped two in a row following a five-game winning streak.

Losing pitcher Jared Weaver (9-1) suffered his first major league setback after failing to become the first AL rookie to win his first 10 decisions.

In six innngs, he gave up one run and four hits.
