MLB: N.Y. Yankees 8, Toronto 1

NEW YORK, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- A three-run homer by Jason Giambi in the first inning Thursday started the New York Yankees on their way to an 8-1 rout of Toronto for a three-game sweep.

Giambi later hit a run-scoring double for a total of four RBI; Craig Wilson hit a two-run single; Bobby Abreu had two runs and three hits; Derek Jeter had a hit and scored twice; Alex Rodriguez scored two runs; and Melky Cabrera hit an RBI single for the Yankees (64-41).

Jeter extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

In his first start as a Yankee, winner Cory Lidle (1-0) surrendered one run and four hits in six innings.

Lidle and Abreu were obtained from Philadelphia before the July 31 trading deadline.

Ryan Roberts hit a solo home run for the Blue Jays (57-51), who have dropped five games in a row.

The loser was starter Shaun Marcum (1-1).
