MLB: N.Y. Yankees 8, Texas 7

ARLINGTON, Texas, July 26 (UPI) -- Jason Giambi hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning Wednesday night as the New York Yankees edged Texas, 8-7.

The win gave the Yankees a 1/2 game lead over both Minnesota and the Chicago White Sox in the American League wild-card race.

Alex Rodriguez had a solo home run among his two runs, two hits and one RBI; Andy Phillips hit a two-run double; and Melky Cabrera had two hits and two RBI for the Yankees (58-40).

The winner was Shawn Chacon (5-3). Mariano Rivera earned his 25th save.

Hank Blalock, who had three hits, smacked an RBI double and an RBI single; Michael Young hit a two-run single; Kevin Mench had two hits and three RBI; and Mark Teixeira had two runs and three hits for the Rangers (51-50), who have a four-game losing streak.

The loser was Akinori Otsuka (2-4).
