Lincicome wins the LPGA Match Play

GLADSTONE, N.J., July 9 (UPI) -- Brittany Lincicome beat Julie Inkster, 3 & 2, Sunday afternoon to win the Women's World Match Play Championship at Gladstone, N.J.

It was the first win on the LPGA Tour for the 21-year-old Lincicome, who beat Lorena Ochoa with a birdie on the first extra hole in the semifinals earlier in the day.

Inkster had beaten Paula Creamer, 5 & 4.

"Hopefully great things are to come," said Lincicome, who won $500,000 and climbed to sixth on the tour's money list. "It's a little overwhelming right now. It's a huge confidence booster. I'm very excited because I played so well."

As an amateur, Lincicome led after the first round of the 2004 U.S. Women's Open, but finished 55th. Last week, she shared the 54-hole lead of the U.S. Women's Open with Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie. Before Sunday, her best finish on the LPGA Tour was a third at this year's LPGA Takefuji Classic.
