NEW YORK, May 28 (UPI) -- Johnny Damon hit a lead-off home run in the first inning Sunday as the New York Yankees beat Kansas City, 6-5.

Derek Jeter had two runs and two hits; Gary Sheffield had one run and two hits; Damon had one run, two hits and one RBI; and Alex Rodriguez had one hit and two RBI for the Yankees (28-20), who have won four of their last five games.

In 5 1/3 innings, winner Jaret Wright (3-3) gave up three runs and nine hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Mariano Rivera got his 11th save.

Emil Brown had one run, three hits and one RBI; and Mark Grudzielanek, Reggie Sanders, Matt Stairs and Angel Berroa each drove in one run for the Royals (11-37), who have lost 14 of their last 15 games.

Loser Runelvys Hernandez (1-4) gave up six hits and five runs in 2/3 of an inning.
