MLB: Boston 4, Tampa Bay 1

BOSTON, May 25 (UPI) -- David Ortiz had one run, two hits and one RBI Thursday night to help Boston beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 4-1.

Kevin Youkilis had one run and two hits, while both Mark Loretta and Jason Varitek had two hits and knocked in one run for the Red Sox (27-18), who posted the third win in their last five games.

Winning pitcher Josh Beckett (7-1) scattered four hits over six scoreless innings with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Rookie closer Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 16th save.

Johnny Gomes had one hit and knocked in the only run, Carl Crawford had three hits, and Julio Lugo -- who scored the run -- and Greg Norton had two hits for the Devil Rays (21-27), who have three losses in their last four games.

Losing pitcher Doug Waechter (0-3) gave up three runs and 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out three.
