Hornets' Paul is NBA rookie of the year

NEW YORK, May 10 (UPI) -- New Orleans guard Chris Paul received all but one first-place vote in winning the balloting for NBA rookie of the year.

The NBA released results Wednesday of the voting by 125 sports writers and broadcasters, and said 124 made Paul their first choice. He was second on the other ballot and finished with 623 points.

Paul's showing is the best since San Antonio's David Robinson took 100 percent of the first-place votes in 1989-90. He was also a unanimous choice for the NBA all-rookie team announced last week.

Paul, from Wake Forest, was the fourth overall pick in last year's draft. He led NBA rookies with averages of 16.1 points, 7.8 assists and 2.2 steals per game. More important, the Hornets, 38-44 this year, showed a 20-game improvement over last season.

Toronto's Charlie Villanueva finished second with 248 points and Milwaukee's Andrew Bogut was third with 98 points. Utah's Deron Williams received the other first-place vote but came in sixth in the overall voting.
