BOSTON, May 4 (UPI) -- Russ Adams knocked in John McDonald in the ninth inning, giving the Toronto Blue Jays a 7-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox.
Lyle Overbay, who finished with four hits, opened the Toronto ninth Wednesday with a single and was replaced by McDonald. After Gregg Zaun singled, Adams stroked a double to right and drove in the winning run.
Boston reliever Jonathan Papelbon (0-1) was tagged with the run, ending a 21 1/3-inning scoreless streak, and the loss. Dustin McGowan (1-0) blew a save opportunity for Toronto but did collect the win.
The Red Sox got 3-hit, 2-RBI games from Mike Lowell and Willy Mo Pena.
Each team scored three times in the second inning, setting up the see-saw nature of the game. Boston led 5-4 after six innings before Shae Hillenbrand hit a 2-run home run to put the Blue Jays up 6-5. The Red Sox tied the score in the eighth, costing McGowan his save opportunity. Lowell singled in the run with the 1,000th hit of his career.
