Astros make an offer to Roger Clemens

HOUSTON, May 3 (UPI) -- Executives of the Houston Astros have met with the agent of free agent pitcher Roger Clemens about his possible return to baseball this season.

General Manager Tim Purpura and team owner Drayton McLane, Jr. said they made Clemens a contract offer.

"We put forth a very strong number," Purpura told the Houston Chronicle. "It's always hard to know, it's impossible to know what numbers are out there."

The paper also reported that a source said the dollar amount would be at no less than the $18 million Clemens made with the team in 2005.

Last season, Clemens, 43, a 22-year veteran, was 13-8 with a major league low ERA of 1.87.

The 11-time all-star has won seven Cy Young awards and has a career record of 341-172 with Boston, Toronto, the New York Yankees and Astros. He likely would not be ready to pitch again until at least June after pitching in the World Baseball Classic in March.
