ESPN reported the investigation on Wednesday night.

It comes in the wake of the release of the book "Game of Shadows," co-authored by investigative reporters Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams of the San Francisco Chronicle. The book offers a chronology of the use of performance-enhancing supplements by Giants slugger Barry Bonds.

The New York Times reported earlier Wednesday that Commissioner Bud Selig was on the verge of announcing an investigation into steroid use by Bonds and other players. ESPN also reported that Bonds and any other current player who may be part of this investigation will be allowed to play while the investigation is ongoing.

Among others likely to be investigated are former players Sammy Sosa, Rafael Palmeiro and Mark McGwire.
