Vaidisova, Hantuchova win openers in Tokyo

TOKYO, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic and Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia posted opening-round wins Tuesday at the $1.34 million Toray Pan Pacific Open.

Vaidisova beat Japan's Rika Fujiwara 6-3, 6-1, while Hantuchova overcame Serbian Jelena Jankovic 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In one other match involving a seed, No. 8 Serbian Ana Ivanovic erased Japanese crowd favorite Ai Sugiyama 6-3, 6-0.

Former world No. 1 Martina Hingis will meet Korean Yoon Jeong Cho in a first-round bout Wednesday. The Swiss star is fresh off her quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open, her first performance in a Grand Slam in over three years.

Hingis has won this event four times, but hasn't played here since 2002.

Maria Sharapova, this week's top seed, beat American Lindsay Davenport in last year's final.
