Grosjean falls to Kiefer at Aus. Open

MELBOURNE, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Germany's Nicolas Kiefer upended Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean Wednesday at the Australian Open in five sets to reach his first grand slam semifinal.

Kiefer, seeded 21st, scored a 6-3, 0-6, 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 8-6 victory over his 25th-seeded opponent in the quarterfinals over four hours, 48 minutes.

Kiefer won despite 67 unforced errors and 59 winners from Grosjean. Kiefer also had nine double faults and Grosjean had 12 aces to just four for his opponent.

Kiefer will face either top-seeded Roger Federer, who won the Aussie title in 2004, or fifth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko.

Fourth-seeded Argentine David Nalbandian and unseeded Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis will battle in the other semifinal.
