NHL: N.Y. Islanders 5, Washington 3

WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Petteri Nokelainen had a goal and an assist Thursday night to help the New York Islanders beat Washington, 5-3.

Alexei Yashin, Trent Hunter, Jason Blake and Mark Parrish each scored and Oleg Kvasha had three assists for the Islanders, who improved to 2-2.

Matt Bradley had two goals, Steve Eminger had one, and rookie sensation Alexander Ovechkin had an assist for the Capitals (2-4-0). Ovechkin has scored in all six games.

Both Garth Snow and Rick DiPietro had 13 saves for the Islanders, who out-shot the Capitals by 49-29. Brent Johnson, who surrendered five goals, was able to make 44 saves for Washington, which was 0-for-5 on the power play.

New York went 0-for-7.
