NHL: Carolina 7, Washington 2

RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Seven different players scored goals Wednesday night as Carolina rallied to beat the Washington Capitals, 7-2.

The Panthers spotted Washington the game's first goal by rookie sensation Alexander Ovechkin, and trailed, 2-1, before erupting for six consecutive goals. They scored four in the closing period.

Capitals' goaltender Olaf Kolzig could stop only 19 of the 25 shots he faced before being pulled for Brent Johnson halfway through the third period. Carolina, which got one goal each from Matt Cullen, Eric Staal, Bret Hedican, Erik Cole, Justin Williams, Rod Brind'Amour, and Niklas Nordgren, converted 3-of-6 power play chances and out-shot the Capitals, 36-28.

Goalie Cam Ward made 26 saves for the Hurricanes (2-2-0). Washington fell to 2-3-0.
