NEW YORK, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- The LA Angels of Anaheim beat the New York Yankees Friday night, 11-7, to take a 2-1 lead in their American League Division Series.
Garret Anderson went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer and knocked in five runs, Vladimir Guerrero added two hits and scored three runs scored, and Bengie Molina went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer for the Angels, who bested Yankee pitching for 19 hits and scored two runs in each of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to thwart a Yankee comeback.
Winning pitcher Scot Shields (1-0) hurled two scoreless innings.
Hideki Matsui and Derek Jeter homered for the Yankees, who had 12 hits, two by Bernie Williams, who likely will not be re-signed in the off-season. He also had an RBI.
In relief, the loser was Aaron Small (0-1), who was 10-0 during the regular season as a starter.
