MAYNOOTH COUNTY, KILDARE, Ireland, May 22 (UPI) -- Stephen Dodd birdied the first playoff hole Sunday to beat David Howell at the Nissan Irish Open for his second victory of the season.

Dodd and Howell finished regulation tied at 9-under 279 after both players birdied the 72nd hole.

They returned to the par-five 18th to begin the extra session and Howell split the fairway, while Dodd left his drive in the right rough. Howell put his second shot into the rough while Dodd reached the green with his second shot and two-putted for the win.

Dodd had held the 36-hole lead but a 72 Saturday left him four shots off the pace of Nick Dougherty.

Dougherty shot a 74 on Sunday to share third place with Angel Cabrera at 281. Padraig Harrington had a 69 to finish one shot further back at 282 along with Lee Westwood and Nick O'Hern.
