Phillies and Nationals swap outfielders

PHILADELPHIA, May 14 (UPI) -- Philadelphia and Wasington swwapped outfielders Saturday with Marlon Byrd going to the Nationals and Endy Chavez to the Phillies.

Byrd was 4-for-13 (.308) in five games for the Phillies this season. After playing in 10 games as a September call-up in 2002, Byrd batted .303 with seven homers and 45 RBI in 135 games during his rookie campaign of 2003.

Last season, his average dipped to .228 and the Phillies sent him down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre during the season and trade for veteran centerfielder Kenny Lofton in December.

Byrd, 27, is a .271 career hitter with 13 home runs, 79 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 256 games.

Chavez, 27, is batting .222 with no homers and one RBI in seven games for Washington this season. He went into spring training as the Nationals' starting centerfielder and leadoff hitter, but lost the job to Brad Wilkerson after struggling in March.
