San Francisco to lead off NFL Draft

NEW YORK, April 22 (UPI) -- The San Francisco 49ers will have the first pick in the NFL Draft Saturday and they are remaining very quiet about how they will use it.

The annual selection of college players will take place during Saturday and Sunday with 255 draft choices to be made during seven rounds.

A quarterback has been selected No. 1 six of the last seven years and there is speculation the 49ers will take Utah quarterback Alex Smith with their top choice.

San Francisco Coach Mike Nolan, however, is not saying.

"We want to maintain the value of the pick," Nolan said. "If we say what we are going to do, the value will not be the same."

Miami, Cleveland, Chicago and Tampa Bay will draft second through fifth. Minnesota will have two of the first 18 picks and Dallas will have two of the first 20.

In addition to Smith, players expected to go early include running backs Ronnie Brown of Auburn and Cedric Benson of Texas, receiver Braylon Edwards of Michigan and quarterback Aaron Rodgers of California.
