MLB: Philadelphia 8, Washington 4

PHILADELPHIA, April 4 (UPI) -- Kenny Lofton hit a three-run homer Monday that helped Philadelphia spoil the first game of the Washington Nationals, 8-4.

Jon Lieber got the win by pitching 5 2/3 innings. Both Lofton and Lieber played the 2004 season with the New York Yankees.

Charlie Manuel won in his debut as Philadelphia manager.

A Washington franchise played in the major leagues for the first time in more than three decades and Livan Hernandez had the honor of starting the first game for the Nationals.

Hernandez gave up seven runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. Terrmel Sledge hit a two-run homer for Washington.
