Canada, Italy tie for World Cup golf lead

GEORGE, South Africa, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Canada and Italy shared the lead Friday after the opening-round of the inaugural Women's World Cup of Golf in South Africa.

Canadians Lorie Kane and Dawn Coe-Jones and Italy's Diana Luna and Giulia Sergas each combined for a 7-under-par 66 in a better-ball format to take a one-stroke lead.

Competitors will play an alternate-shot format Saturday and 18 holes of individual stroke play Sunday.

Sweden (Carin Koch and Sophie Gustafson), Japan (Ai Miyazato and Rui Kitada), Australia (Karrie Webb and Rachel Hetherington) and the Philippines (Jennifer Rosales and Dorothy Delasin) were all at 68.

The American team of Beth Daniel and Meg Mallon shot a 69. Others at that score included the British team of Karen Stupples and Laura Davies.
