Singh shoots for 9th win of season

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Vijay Singh, already far ahead on the money list, has a chance to reach the $10 million mark this week in Florida.

Singh, the defending champion, heads the field in the Funai Classic, opening Thursday at Disney's Magnolia and Palm courses.

Singh has already won $9,455,566 this year.

The world No. 1 player won by four strokes last year over Tiger Woods, Scott Verplank and Stewart Cink.

Singh has won 23 tournaments in his PGA career.

His score in the Funai Classic last year was 23 under par.

The Magnolia course is the longest of the two Disney courses at 7,190 yards. The Palm layout is 6,957. Both are par-72.

Woods, who was married Oct. 15, decided not to play in the tournament this year -- the first time he has missed it. Cink is also skipping the event.

Verplank is in the field, which also includes Jim Furyk, Chris DiMarco, Stephen Ames, Stewart Appleby, Chad Campbell, John Daly, Steve Flesch, David Toms and Brent Geiberger, who won last week's Chrysler Classic.
