MLB: Boston 8, Anaheim 6 (10 inn.)

BOSTON, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- A two-run, two-out homer by David Ortiz in the 10th inning Friday night put Boston in the AL Championship Series with an 8-6 win over Anaheim.

For only the second time in franchise history, Boston swept a playoff series. Its only other sweep came in 1975 against Oakland.

The Red Sox appeared ready to run away with the contest, owning a 6-1 lead in the seventh. But Anaheim put together a five-run inning, highlighted by a grand slam home run from Vladimir Guerrero.

Anaheim missed a big chance in the ninth, loading the bases with one out. But Keith Foulke struck out both Garret Anderson and Troy Glaus to end the threat.

Anaheim's Francisco Rodriguez gave up a leadoff single to Johnny Damon in the 10th and Damon was forced at second on a grounder by Mark Bellhorn.

Pinch-hitter Manny Ramirez struck out, after which Jarrod Washburn relieved Rodriguez. Ortiz, who also doubled in a run during Boston's three-run fourth, homered on Washburn's first pitch.
