FARMINGTON, Pa., Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Vijay Singh, shooting for his eighth victory of the year, leads the field in the 84 Lumber Classic this week in southwest Pennsylvania.

The tournament begins Thursday on the 7,486-yard, par-72 Mystic Rock course at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.

Singh, the world's top-ranked player, has won the PGA Championship, Deutsche Bank Championship, Canadian Open, Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Houston Open, Buick Open and HP Classic of New Orleans in 2004.

His winnings have totaled $8,699,566. If he takes the first prize of $756,000 at Mystic Rock, he will surpass Tiger Woods' single-season record of $9,188,321, set in 2000.

Woods had been expected to play in the 84 Lumber event but withdrew, ending what was being billed as a showdown between the world's top two players.

This week's field includes Mike Weir, Stewart Cink, Chris DiMarco, David Toms and John Daly.

Last year's winner was J.L. Lewis, who shot a course-record 62 in the final round to finish two shots ahead of Stuart Appleby, Frank Lickliter and Tim Petrovic. Lewis, Lickliter and Petrovic are back this year.
