NEW YORK, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- After a day-long rain delay, Lindsay Davenport reached the U.S. Open semifinals Wednesday night with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Japan's Shinobu Asagoe.
After Davenport's win, however, the rains returned and forced a suspension of two men's quarterfinal matches.
Davenport was scheduled to begin her match at 11 a.m., but did not take the court until shortly before 7:30 p.m.
She needed only 45 minutes to dispose of Asagoe. If Davenport wins the championship, she will overtake Justine Henin-Hardenne as the No. 1 player in the world.
In the other women's quarterfinal Wednesday, ninth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated 14th-seeded Nadia Petrova, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Kuznetsova will face Davenport in the semifinals.
Top-seeded Roger Federer was leading Andre Agassi in their quarterfinal match, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, when rain interrupted play. The match will be completed Thursday.
Tim Henman also was in front of Dominik Hrbaty, 6-1, 7-5, 4-5, when their match was suspended.
