MLB: Chicago Cubs 5, Montreal 2

MONTREAL, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Greg Maddux pitched seven shutout innings and went 2-for-3 with an RBI on Monday to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 5-2 victory over the Montreal Expos.

Sammy Sosa finished 2-for-4 and drove in two runs as the Cubs put an end to a three-game slide and gave Manager Dusty Baker his 1,000th career victory. Paul Bako added a pair of hits and scored twice to help Chicago move a half-game in front of idle San Diego in the National League wild card race.

Maddux (13-8) scattered five hits and walked none before exiting. The 38-year-old is now 6-1 with a 2.27 ERA over his last nine starts.

LaTroy Hawkins earned his 20th save.

Terrmel Sledge went 3-for-4 including a two-run homer.

Rocky Biddle (4-8) took the loss after allowing five runs, although only two were earned, in five innings.
