MLB: NY Yankees 6, Baltimore 4

NEW YORK, July 31 (UPI) -- Alex Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored Saturday to lead the New York Yankees to a 6-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

Gary Sheffield also had a homer and two RBI for the Yankees, who have won eight of their last 12 contests.

Javier Vazquez worked 5 1/3 innings for the win. Vazquez (12-6) allowed four runs on four hits, while walking two and striking out three. Mariano Rivera recorded the final three outs for his 37th save.

The Yankees acquired pitcher Esteban Loaiza from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline in exchange for pitcher Jose Contreras and cash.

Erik Bedard (4-6) suffered the loss after surrendering five runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Jerry Hairston homered for Baltimore, which has dropped six of its last nine games.
