HOUSTON, July 13 (UPI) -- Roger Clemens was ripped for six runs in the first inning Tuesday as the American League trounced the National League, 9-4.
The gave the American League home-field advantage in this year's World Series.
Clemens, 41-year-old righthander of the Houston Astros and oldest pitcher to start an All-Star Game, allowed extra-base hits to four of the first eight batters, including homers to Manny Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano.
Never before had a team hit for the cycle in one inning during All-Star competition, but the AL did it to Clemens, who never allowed six runs in the opening inning in any of his 624 regular-season starts.
AL starter Mark Mulder of Oakland pitched well with the early cushion, allowing a run and two hits in two innings.
New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter went 3-for-3.
The American League is unbeaten in All-Star competition since 1997.
