Pavel advances, three seeds fall

STUTTGART, Germany, July 13 (UPI) -- Fourth-seeded Andrei Pavel of Romania advanced to the third round while three other seeds failed to survive Tuesday in the Mercedes Cup.

Pavel, who resides in Germany, rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic.

Nikolay Davydenko, the 15th-seeded Russian, defeated Andreas Beck of Germany, 6-3, 6-3, in a second-round match.

Returning finalist Tommy Robredo, fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez and Florian Mayer of Germany were the seeded players who lost their second-round matches in the claycourt event.

French qualifier Richard Gasquet stunned the sixth-seeded Robredo, 6-1, 6-4, and Stefan Koubek of Austria knocked off the seventh-seeded Lopez, 6-3, 6-4, in a battle of lefthanders.

Mayer, seeded ninth, was beaten by Argentina's Guillermo Canas, a two-time finalist in this event, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
