Gaudio advances at Swedish Open

BASTAD, Sweden, July 6 (UPI) -- Argentina's Gaston Gaudio, making his first appearance since winning the French Open, had an easy time Tuesday in his opening match at the Swedish Open.

The second-seeded Gaudio beat Russian Nikolay Davydenko, 6-3, 6-1.

In his only previous appearance here, Gaudio lost in the first round in 1999 to Markus Hipfl.

Spain's Tommy Robredo, the No. 5 seed, needed three sets to oust Agustin Calleri, another Argentine, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

No. 6 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile dispatched Peru's Luis Horna, 6-3, 6-2, and No. 8 Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina, the defending champion, advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Sweden's Joachim Johannson.

The only upset victim was No. 7 Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden, who fell to qualifier Santiago Ventura of Spain, 6-2, 6-2. Bjorkman was coming off his third straight Wimbledon doubles crown.
