LONDON, June 28 (UPI) -- Defending champion Roger Federer and 2002 winner Lleyton Hewitt, advanced at Wimbledon Monday and will meet in the quarterfinals.
Federer, the world's top player from Switzerland, defeated 6-foot-10 Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 6-3 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5) and Australia's Hewitt ousted Spain's Carlos Moya 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3).
American Andy Roddick, the No. 2 seed behind Federer, won 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 over Germany's Alexander Popp and will next meet Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands.
American veteran Lindsay Davenport, 17-year-old Maria Sharapova of Russia, Ali Sugiyama of Japan and Karolina Sprem reached the quarterfinals on the women's side.
Sprem, the unseeded, unheralded 19-year-old Croatian who knocked American Venus Williams out of the tournament last week, beat 29-year-old Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria.
Other winners included Tim Henman of Britain, Sebastien Grosjean of France, Mario Ancic of Croatia and German Florian Mayer.
