DETROIT, May 1 (UPI) -- Jeremy Bonderman pitched into the eighth inning Saturday, retiring 16 straight batters at one point, as Detroit defeated Seattle, 4-2.
Ivan Rodriguez and Greg Norton homered for the Tigers.
The Tigers avoided their first three-game losing streak behind another effective outing from Bonderman (3-1), who lost 19 games as a rookie in 2003, including 13 of his first 15 decisions.
Bonderman allowed a leadoff single to Ichiro Suzuki in the first and did not put another runner on base until Rich Aurilia singled with one out in the sixth.
The 21-year-old Bonderman allowed two runs and five hits in 7 2/3 innings. He surrendered an RBI double to John Olerud in the eighth and left after Olerud scored on an error.
Rodriguez blasted a pitch from Ryan Franklin (1-2) off the top of the wall in center and Norton made it 4-0 with his first homer of the season in fifth.
