Two Twins catchers out with injuries

MINNEAPOLIS, April 8 (UPI) -- Two Minnesota Twins catchers have been sidelined with injuries in two days.

The Twins placed Matt LeCroy on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with a pulled rib muscle. LeCroy was injured while swinging at a pitch Wednesday in an 11-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians.

On Wednesday, the Twins lost rookie catcher Joe Mauer indefinitely because of torn cartilage in his left knee. Mauer, injured while trying to make a sliding catch of a foul pop, will need surgery.

Mauer, 20, had become the youngest Major League catcher since Ivan Rodriguez played for Texas at the same age 14 years ago.

The Twins recalled Rob Bowen from New Britain of the Class AA Eastern League to take LeCroy's spot on the roster. The Twins' other remaining uninjured catcher is Henry Blanco.
