Kanaan wins second straight Indy 200

AVONDALE, Ariz., March 21 (UPI) -- Tony Kanaan again was the class of the field Sunday at the Indy Racing League Copper World Indy 200.

Kanaan took the lead from pole-winner Dan Wheldon on the first lap Sunday and gave it up only briefly en route to his second straight win at Phoenix International Raceway.

The 29-year-old Brazilian beat defending IRL champion Scott Dixon of New Zealand to the finish line. Wheldon was third in a Dallara-Honda, followed by Alex Barron in a Dallara/Chevrolet and England's Darren Manning in a G Force/Toyota.

There were three caution periods, one following a spin by Sam Hornish Jr., whose Dallara-Toyota lightly brushed the second turn wall. The rear wing was damaged and Hornish lost five laps while it was replaced.

Ed Carpenter backed his Dallara/Chevrolet into the first turn wall on lap 134 to bring out another yellow flag. The rookie was uninjured.
