Federer, Roddick advance at Pacific Life

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 14 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Roger Federer displayed his all-court game Sunday against Romanian Andrei Pavel for a 6-1, 6-2 second-round victory at the Pacific Life Open.

"I was eager to play Sunday because I came from Europe," said Federer, the reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon champion. "I feel it always takes time just to get used to the different conditions, the jet lag and all of this. It's much warmer here, the court plays very similar, and that was good."

Andy Roddick had 38 winners Sunday, including 21 aces, and never dropped serve as he powered past fellow American Jan-Michael Gambill, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

The third-seeded Roddick will meet wild card entry Marat Safin in a rematch of a 2004 Australian Open quarterfinal pairing. Safin defeated Czech qualifier Jan Hernych, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

On the women side, third-seeded American Lindsay Davenport continued her impressive desert run with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Samantha Stosur.
