NBA: Memphis 99, Minnesota 98

MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Shane Battier hit a jumper with 2.9 seconds remaining Sunday as the Memphis Grizzlies set a franchise record for wins in a season with a 99-98 victory over Minnesota.

After All-Star Sam Cassell made two free throws with 13 seconds left to give the Timberwolves a 98-97 lead, the Grizzlies called a timeout. Coach Hubie Brown opted to go for offense and inserted Battier into the game for Bo Outlaw. The move paid off as Battier worked off a pick and converted his jumper over Cassell's outstretched arm.

With Cassell and fellow All-Star Kevin Garnett on the floor, the Timberwolves went to Mark Madsen who worked inside on James Posey and took the inbounds pass before missing a layup as time expired.

Pau Gasol scored 27 points to lead the Grizzlies, who improved to 29-22 on the season.

Cassell had 34 points and Garnett had 30 points and 16 rebounds for Minnesota.
