Native sons highlight play at Melbourne

MELBOURNE, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- When the Australian Open continues, the home crowd could have plenty of reason to howl.

Three natives are scheduled for fourth round matches, including men's world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt. He plays 17-year-old Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

Also, Mark Philippoussis meets Croatian teenager Mario Ancic; and 19-year-old Todd Reid battles second-seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland.

The three are the only Australians remaining on the men's side of the draw. No Aussie has won the tournament since Mark Edmondson in 1976.

In Thursday's highlight matches, top seed Andy Roddick, who is seeking his second straight Grand Slam title, beat Taylor Dent, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, and No. 4 Andre Agassi blasted Thomas Enqvist, 6-0, 6-3, 6-3.

In women's play, third-seeded Venus Williams meets Lisa Raymond, and No. 2 Kim Clijsters of Belgium faces Russia's Dinara Safina.

Among Thursday's winners were Justin Henin-Hardenne, Lindsay Davenport, and Amelie Mauresmo.
