Reports: Astros make offer to Clemens

HOUSTON, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- The Houston Astros have made their pitch to Roger Clemens.

Reports are that the team has offered the veteran righthander, who has said he is retired, a one-year contract. The Houston Chronicle and MLB.com have reported that the two sides have formulated parameters, but do not have an agreement.

"I characterize our discussions as revolving around financial parameters, not on a formal offer," Clemens' agent, Randy Hendricks, told MLB.com. "But this is not an issue. The issue is whether Roger will play."

Clemens, 41, went 17-9 for the New York Yankees in 2003. The six-time Cy Young Award winner retired after last season with a career record of 310-160 and had 4,099 strikeouts.

If he signs, he will rejoin former Yankee teammate Andy Pettitte, who signed with the Astros as a free agent in December.
