Atlanta 6, Arizona 1

ATLANTA, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Mike Hampton scattered four hits over eight innings Monday afternoon to win his eighth straight decision as Atlanta thumped Arizona, 6-1.

In the victory, Gary Sheffield and Marcus Giles had home runs.

Hampton had more support than Greg Maddux had on Sunday in a 2-0 loss to Curt Schilling.

Sheffield hit his 31st homer in the fifth to extend his hitting streak to 22 games. Giles had an RBI single in the first and hit his 17th homer in the seventh.

That would be more than enough for Hampton (11-5), who is unbeaten in his last nine starts since a July 1 setback at Florida. The veteran southpaw walked two, struck out four, and did not allow a hit after the fourth inning.

One of the hits was a solo home run by Luis Gonzalez in the fourth.

Miguel Batista (7-7) took the loss, allowing five runs and seven hits in five innings.
