San Diego 5, Philadelphia 4 (10 innings)

SAN DIEGO, May 3 (UPI) -- Sean Burroughs spoiled Jose Mesa's save attempt with a two-run single in the bottom of the 10th inning Friday night to give the San Diego Padres a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

After Bobby Abreu singled to plate Placido Polanco with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th, Phillies Manager Larry Bowa called upon his closer to secure the victory.

But Ryan Klesko greeted Mesa (1-2) with a single and moved to second on a one-out walk to Mark Kotsay. Rookie Xavier Nady singled to load the bases before Burroughs drove Mesa's first offering into right field, scoring Klesko.

Mesa, who is tied with Tug McGraw for third on Philadelphia's saves list with 94, allowed two runs and three hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Mike Matthews (1-0) benefited from Mesa's ineffectiveness to earn the win despite yielding a run and two hits in one inning.

Klesko and Ramon Vazquez homered for the Padres, who snapped a five-game losing skid.
