Philadelphia 4, Los Angeles 1

LOS ANGELES, May 2 (UPI) -- Brandon Duckworth watched Terry Adams and Turk Wendell pitch out of bases-loaded jams and Bobby Abreu and Mike Lieberthal each homered Thursday night as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-1.

Duckworth (2-1) allowed an unearned run and seven hits in five-plus innings. He was chased after Los Angeles began the sixth with three straight singles and the Phillies holding a 4-0 lead.

Adams entered and got Adrian Beltre to pop out before Daryle Ward grounded into a forceout, scoring the Dodgers' only run. Ward was safe at first when Adams dropped the relay throw while covering. But Jolbert Cabrera grounded out to end the inning.

The Dodgers, who left nine runners on, also filled the bases in the eighth inning and Wendell replaced Dan Plesac. The struggling Beltre hit a shallow fly ball, Ward hit into a forceout at home and Cabrera fouled out.

Phillies closer Jose Mesa pitched a hitless ninth for his seventh save in eight chances.

Philadelphia scored three times before Los Angeles starter Hideo Nomo (3-4) recorded an out. Jimmy Rollins led off the game with a double and scored on scored on David Bell's single. Abreu followed by drilling a 2-1 offering deep over the right field fence for his fourth homer of the season.

Lieberthal belted his fifth career homer off Nomo with a solo shot with two outs in the sixth inning.
