Shaughnessy earns semifinal berth

CANBERRA, Australia, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Second seed Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States advanced to the semifinals of the Canberra Women's Classic Thursday with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over No. 8 Magui Serna of Spain.

Shaughnessy, who reached the final at Sydney a year ago, is looking for her third career WTA title. She captured the 2000 Shanghai crown and the 2001 Quebec title.

Shaughnessy will meet Emilie Loit of France, who eliminated Adriana Serra-Zanetti of Italy, 6-4, 6-2.

In the other semifinal, fifth seed Francesca Schiavone will meet French qualifier Marion Bartoli.

Schiavone moved on by outlasting compatriot Flavia Pennetta, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Bartoli ousted Germany's Marlene Weingartner, 6-4, 6-4.
