Claude Lemieux set the tone late in the first period when he got a pass from Daymond Langkow and beat Pasi Nurminen on a shorthanded breakaway to put the Coyotes ahead for good.

Lemieux also recorded his 400th NHL assist early in the second when he set up a power-play tally by Tony Amonte, who fired a slap shot from the edge of the left faceoff circle past Nurminen to double the advantage.

Mike Johnson made it 3-0 just 48 seconds later, but Dany Heatley put a rebound past Brian Boucher to put Atlanta on the board at 7:54.

The Coyotes put it away as Landon Wilson and Daniel Briere scored 32 seconds apart in the final two minutes of the period.

Wilson flipped one over Nurminen's shoulder and Briere swept a loose puck into the net after the Thrashers were unable to get their stick on it.
