Grizzlies dump Massenburg

MEMPHIS, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- The Memphis Grizzlies, who have an abundance of young, talented players in their frontcourt, Wednesday placed veteran Tony Massenburg on waivers.

Massenburg had five points and 12 rebounds in two preseason games. On Monday, he placed on the injured list with right knee tendinitis.

The 6-9, 250-pounder averaged 5.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per contest in 73 games, including 31 starts, with the Grizzlies last season. In 10 NBA seasons with as many teams, the former University of Maryland star has averaged 7.0 points and 4.9 rebounds in 505 games.

"Tony has been a real professional and an asset to the Grizzlies and teams that he has played for throughout his playing career," said Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West. "However, to achieve success for this team in the future, we need to develop our younger players and give our young nucleus as much opportunity as possible to play. I certainly give Tony my best wishes for his future."

Massenburg, 34, also has played in Italy and Spain, and had two stints with the Grizzlies.

"I have certianly appreciated Tony's professional attitude and work ethic," said Grizzlies Coach Sidney Lowe. "However, we need to develop our young guys and give them an opportunity to play and see what they can do to help our team in the future. We also want to give him an opportunity to join another team earlier rather than later in the season. I certainly want to thank Tony for what he has contributed to our team and wish him well."

The Grizzlies, who never have finished higher than sixth in the Midwest Division, have reigning Rookie of the Year Pau Gasol, former Duke All-American Shane Battier, Stromile Swift and first-round pick Drew Gooden, the former University of Kansas star.

Memphis hosts the Dallas Mavericks in its season opener Thursday night.
