Washington 2, NY Islanders 1

UNIONDALE, N.Y., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Jaromir Jagr scored off a broken play with 4:36 remaining Saturday night to give the Washington Capitals a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders.

Robert Lang set up behind the net on a Washington power play and passed in front to defenseman Calle Johansson.

Johansson got just a piece of the puck, which slid to Jagr near the right goalpost. Goaltender Chris Osgood appeared to have stopped Jagr's shot with his pads, but the puck trickled into the net.

It was the second strange goal of the night for the Capitals, who got their first when Glen Metropolit beat Osgood after coming up with the puck in traffic in front of the net with 4:52 left in the second period.

Washington won despite being limited to 14 shots. The Capitals relied on Olaf Kolzig, who made 35 saves and was beaten only by a stinging slap shot from Alexei Yashin 14:53 into the game.

On an Islanders' power play, Yashin cruised to the faceoff dot and ripped a blast over the goalie's left shoulder.

Playing their home opener before a sellout crowd at Nassau Coliseum, the Islanders were one for nine on the power play for the second straight game.

The Capitals survived a New York power play after Jeff Halpern took a tripping penalty with 2:34 left in the third period.

The Islanders are 0-2 after opening last season 9
